Rosbergs

Anchoring the downtown of Niagara Falls, Ontario since 1919 was a department store called Rosbergs. Jacob Rosberg opened the store after relocating from Toronto. The store lasted over 70 years, but finally succumbed to the curses of many a Niagara downtown, suburbanization and cross-border shopping. After sitting shut since December 1988, the Rosbergs building was participating in the artistically-based rejeuvenation of downtown Queen Street by hosting a photography exhibit in its iconic windows. Unfortunately, those photos, and the memories of the many who shopped inside 74 Erie Avenue, went up in flames last Sunday. Here are some shots of Rosbergs in 2004, still boarded up, and yesterday, in ruins.
